ABRUZZO

Located in the center-eastern of Italy, this region ranges from the sea to the mountains.
In this article, we want to suggest you some places are worth to visit at least once in a lifetime.
So, let's get started!

SCANNO LAKE

Scanno Lake from the "Belvedere alto"

Search for "Sentiero del Cuore" on Google Maps and follow the directions

Scanno lake is one of the largest lakes in the Abruzzo region, famous and unique for its heart shape.
There are two paths which lead to the panoramic point (called "Belvedere alto"), where you can see the heart in its totality;
one that starts from below near the lake, and another that starts from the Scanno village.

The pathway starts with a white stones road, easily walkable on foot (at least with sneakers).
Arriving at a junction, where on the right there is a draw-well and a church, you have to turn left and pass through an old rusty gate.
From there, always go straight and you'll get directly to the best panoramic point of the heart-shaped Scanno lake.
Starting from the village, it takes about 20 minutes to reach the panoramic point.

ROCCA CALASCIO

The Castle of Rocca Calascio is a mountaintop fortress or rocca in the municipality of Calascio, in the Province of L'Aquila.
It lies within the "Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga" national park and alongside the high plain of Campo Imperatore.

Near the fortress, at a slightly lower elevation, there is Santa Maria della Pietà, an octagonal church built in the seventeenth century.
The city where this castle is located is considered a ghost town because there are practically no people left, with a few houses, an hotel and a cafe.

The best time to visit this place is at sunset, being able to see the Sun disappearing between the panoramic mountains and enlightening the surrounding area.

CAMPO IMPERATORE

Campo Imperatore is the largest plateau of all the Apennines, with a total extension of 75 square kilometers.
Often referred to as "little Tibet" because of the immense and uncontaminated landscapes, joined by roads immersed in nature, surrounded by the mountains of the "Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga" national park.

This place can be visited in any month of the year, making a small clarification on how to get there;
in fact, in the milder months, you can travel and reach Campo Imperatore by car/motorcycle, since the road that continues from Fonte Cerreto and leads to the crossroads of the Montecristo ski lifts is open.
Along this road, it is possible to fully admire the vastness of the plateau.

However, in the colder months, the only way to reach Campo Imperatore is via the Fonte Cerreto cable car, which, in just seven minutes, allows you to reach the Astronomical Observatory of Campo Imperatore, and the various ski resorts.

An obligatory stop both in the winter and in the warmer months is the "Duca degli Abruzzi" refuge, from which, located at an altitude of 2388 meters above sea level, it offers a breathtaking view of the whole plateau.

Because of the beauty of this place, historic films have been shot in Campo Imperatore such as "They kept calling it Trinity" with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill, "Ladyhawke" with Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer, "In the name of the rose" with Sean Connery and Murray Abraham, and many others.

Located at 1021 meters above sea level, this place is an unmissable stop for street art lovers.

Several internationally renowned artists have made this village a real open-air museum, where you can admire masterpieces of modern art, like Borgo Universo, Stars' Tower, and some more.

SAN DOMENICO LAKE

If you are near Scanno lake, then you must visit San Domenico lake.
As soon as you visit this place, you can immediately see the transparency of the water, that changes color with the seasons.

Swimming in the lake is forbidden in order to preserve its ecology and originality.
Near the lake there is the "Eremo di San Domenico", passing through which it's possible to reach a small beach with a cafe.
In the nearby area, it is fashionable to see different animals, such as ducks, geese, and deer.

It is best to come by motorbike or on a weekday as parking is very difficult to find.

PELINO CONFETTI

Pelino is a famous name in the history of "confetti", with several locations in its hometown.
One of the most interesting and iconic ones is probably the museum in Sulmona;
three floors full of photos, official awards, machinery and historical things.
